Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: effectuous adj., -ly suffix2.
Etymology: Apparently < effectuous adj. (although this is first attested later in the sense corresponding to sense 1) + -ly suffix2, after post-classical Latin effectuose earnestly, with sincere feeling (from 12th cent. in British sources), effectually, so as to produce an (intended) effect (from early 13th cent. in British sources). Compare Anglo-Norman effectuousement affectionately, warmly. Compare affectuously adv.The α. forms, although attested slightly earlier, apparently show reduced forms of the β. forms, although they could alternatively be explained as showing a parallel formation < effect n. + -ous suffix + -ly suffix2. In γ. forms apparently after words in -eous suffix, -ious suffix. Compare affectiously adv.
Obsolete (rare in later use).
1. Urgently, earnestly. Cf. affectuously adv.
