Etymology: < post-classical Latin elegeiographus writer of elegies (1538 or earlier; < Hellenistic Greek ἐλεγειογράϕος writer of elegies < ἐλεγεῖον or ἐλεγεία (see elegy n.) + -γραϕος -graph comb. form) + -er suffix1; compare -grapher comb. form. Compare Middle French, French †elegiographe (1593 as a byname of the Greek poet Butas, or earlier).
Obsolete.
A writer of elegies; an elegist.
