Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἀμϕοδάρχης.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ἀμϕοδάρχης < ἄμϕοδον street, block of houses surrounded by streets ( < ancient Greek ἀμϕι- amphi- prefix + ὁδός way: see -ode comb. form2) + -αρχης -arch comb. form1.The Roman Emperor Hadrian built a colony, Aelia Capitolina, on the site of Jerusalem, in the 2nd cent. a.d. A Byzantine Greek source (of the 7th cent. a.d.) reports that he divided the city into seven districts, each governed by an amphodarch (compare quots. 1855, 1878), but some modern scholars believe this account may be anachronistic.

A civil official exercising authority over one of the administrative districts of a city or town.
