单词 | abote |
释义 | aboteadj. Probably a misreading of a boot (boat n.1).In his edition of the text (1990), Pearsall reads the line Of wiche syght glad, God yt wote, She was, and abasshed annon a boote, and interprets ‘had a boat lowered at once’, understanding abashed as the past participle of abase v., a reading which is supported by the context. The line is difficult to interpret in Speght's edition (1598), but the punctuation favours an understanding of abashed as the past participle of abash v. and a boot as ‘depressed’ or ‘beaten down’. This interpretation was adopted by N.E.D. (1884). ΚΠ 1878 Chaucers Dreme in R. Bell & W. W. Skeat Poet. Wks. Chaucer (rev. ed.)
