Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on French lexical items. Etymons: electro- comb. form, magnet n.
Etymology: < electro- comb. form + magnet n., probably after either electromagnetic adj. (or its etymon French électro-magnétique) or French électro-magnétisme electromagnetism n. Compare French électro-aimant (1832; the word does not appear in the works referred to in quot. 1821).
A magnet in which the magnetic force is produced by passing an electric current; spec. a piece of metal (typically soft iron) enclosed within a wire in such a way that the arrangement acts as a magnet when an electric current is passed through the wire.
