释义

Amazighn.adj.

Brit. /ˌaməˈziːk/, /ˌaməˈziːx/, U.S. /ˌæməˈzik/, /ˌæməˈzix/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, (occasionally) Amazighs.
Forms:

Origin: A borrowing from Berber. Etymon: Berber Amaziγ.
Etymology: < Berber Amaziγ (also transliterated Amazigh; plural Imaziγən), self-designation, apparently < a-, nominal prefix + a second element of uncertain and disputed origin (although this element appears to be an indigenous Berber word). The people call their language Tamaziγt (in which name t..t is a morpheme indicating feminine gender). In quot. 1823 at sense A. 1 via French Amazirgh (1813 in the passage translated). The β. forms reflect the Berber variant Maziγ, which shows loss of the nominal prefix; this is common in several varieties of the language.
