单词 eddish
释义

eddishn.

/ˈɛdɪʃ/
Forms: (? Old English edisc, edesc), 1500s–1600s edysche, edysshe, edish, 1500s–1700s etch(e, 1600s–1700s eadish (1600s esh), (1800s dialect eddige, hedditch), 1600s– eddish. See also arrish n.
Etymology: Of obscure etymology. Usually identified with Old English edisc park or enclosed pasture (glossed vivarium), with which compare Old English yddisc, rendering Latin supellex, supellectile, ? household stuff. It is difficult to see how the meaning of the Old English word could have given rise to the modern sense of eddish, which, though widely diffused in dialects, has not been traced further back than the 15th cent.; and the assumption that ‘aftergrowth’ is the unrecorded primary sense of Old English edisc ‘park’ appears too hazardous. The current derivation < Old English ed- ‘again’ suits the modern sense, but (even if this sense were demonstrated for Old English) involves difficulties with regard to form.
1. Old English edisc: A park or enclosed pasture for cattle.
