empirical formula n. (a) a formula arrived at by observation rather than by deductive reasoning; (b) [after German empirische Formel (1834 in Jahresbericht über die Fortschritte der physischen Wissenschaften 13 186, in a translation of a Swedish text by Berzelius)] Chemistry a formula that gives the proportion or actual number of atoms of the various elements present in a compound, irrespective of their structural arrangement; opposed to rational formula.
