Compare earnest adv.In Old English (and early Middle English) frequent in weakened use as a sentence adverb, typically rendering similarly weakened post-classical Latin use of adverbs indicating cause or reason such as ergo, igitur, itaque, etc. in the Vulgate and other translated sources.
