释义

amongprep.adv.

Brit. /əˈmʌŋ/, U.S. /əˈməŋ/
Forms:

α. Old English ongemæng (rare), Old English ongemang, Old English on gemange (rare), Old English on gemong, Old English ongemong, Old English on gemonge, Old English (early Middle English in a copy of an Old English charter) on gemang.

β. Old English on mang, Old English onmang, early Middle English enmang.

γ. Old English amanc (rare), Old English amancg (rare), Old English–1500s amang, Middle English amange, Middle English amonc, Middle English amonke, Middle English–1600s amonge, Middle English– among, 1500s–1700s amounge; also Irish English 1800s– amang; English regional 1800s– amang (northern and south-western), 1800s– ameng (Yorkshire); Scottish pre-1700 amange, pre-1700 amaunge, pre-1700 1700s– amang, 1700s 1900s– amo, 1700s–1800s amon', 1700s– among, 1800s– amae, 1800s– amo', 1900s– amu'.

δ. Middle English omang.

Etymology: < on prep. + ymong n. Compare Old Saxon an gimang (adverb) in the midst, in between, along with this, together. Compare ymong prep.Development of the preposition in Old English The preposition reflects grammaticalization of a prepositional phrase. For use of the latter compare e.g.:OE Cynewulf Elene 108 Heht þa on uhtan..þæt halige treo him beforan ferian on feonda gemang [i.e. ‘into a crowd of enemies’]. In Old English verse on gemange (with dative singular of ymong n.) is attested in use as a preposition in postmodifying position with the dative (perhaps an archaism reflecting a transitional stage); compare:OE Paris Psalter (1932) lxxxi. 1 God mihtig stod godum on gemange, and he hi on midle mægene tosceadeð. In use as adverb occasionally difficult to distinguish from phrasal use in Old English. Form history. The β. forms show loss of the prefix of the second element (compare y- prefix and see discussion at that entry). Middle English enmang could alternatively show a form of in-mong prep. The γ. forms probably arise from reduction of the first element of the β. forms (compare on- prefix, a- prefix3), although some forms may rather be < ymong prep., with reduction of the first element (compare y- prefix, a- prefix2; compare also emong prep.). Compare also (with complete loss of the first element) 'mong prep. The δ. forms probably reflect variation in the initial element of the β. forms (compare o- at on- prefix Forms). Compare (with different prefixes) bimong prep., in-mong prep. Compare also amongst prep. and see discussion at that entry.
