Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin follis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin follis bronze or copper coin worth two denarii (c320; earlier denoting a sum of money equivalent to 6250 denarii (c310)), transferred use of classical Latin follis bellows, money bag or purse (see fool n.1). Compare Byzantine Greek ϕόλλις sum of money equivalent to 12,500 denarii, also small coin.Compare the following earlier examples of post-classical Latin follis in an English context:1619 R. B. tr. H. Bünting Itinerarium Totius Sacræ Scripturæ 400 Follis of which there is often mention in the Historie of Eusebius, was a brasse, or (as Lampadius saith) an iron coine, so called because there was stampt vpon it the similitude of a leafe, & was worth farthing halfe and one-third.1688 R. Holme Acad. Armory iii. ii. 27/1 The Follis, was a Brass Coin (or Iron as some say) and so called because thereon was stamped the similitude of a Leaf, and was worth a Farthing, half Farthing, and one third of a Farthing.
Numismatics.
1. A name given to a Roman bronze or copper coin introduced by Diocletian in c294.Eighteenth-century numismatists applied the term follis to the coin introduced in Diocletian's denominational reforms. The original name of the coin is unknown.
