Etymology: < dung n.¹ + gate n.¹ In sense 1 ultimately after Hebrew šaʿar ha-'ašpōṯ (Nehemiah 12:31), lit. ‘gate of the refuse heap, gate of the dunghill’, denoting one of the gates of Jerusalem in biblical times; the English use is perhaps immediately after early modern German mistthor (1523 in Luther's translation of the Bible). Compare dung port n. at dung n.¹ Compounds 2.The location of the biblical Dung Gate is unclear; it appears to have been so called on account of the refuse that was taken out from the Temple to be burned. In the Wycliffite Bible it is called drit ȝate , ȝate of drit (compare dirt n.), ȝate of the dunge hil; the Vulgate has porta Sterquilinii, lit. ‘gate of the dunghill’.
