Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French allumette.
Etymology: < Middle French, French allumette match (1213 in Old French as alumete ), food cut in the shape of a match (1379) < allumer to set light to (see allumine v.) + -ette -ette suffix. N.E.D. (1884) gives the unassimilated pronunciation (alüme·t) /alyˈmɛt/.
