Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a Dutch lexical item, and partly modelled on a Portuguese lexical item. Etymons: eagle n., wood n.¹

Etymology: < eagle n. + wood n.¹, after (a) Dutch arendshout (1665 in the passage translated in quot. 1669) and (b) its model Portuguese pau de águila, lit. ‘agila wood’ (1598 or earlier: see agila n.), with reinterpretation of the second element as águila , variant of águia eagle n. Compare earlier agalloch n. and agila n.Compare (ultimately after Portuguese) post-classical Latin lignum aquilae (1597 or earlier), French bois d'aigle (1652 or earlier), Spanish palo de águila (1583 or earlier: see agila n.), Italian legno d'aquila (1592 or earlier), and (apparently immediately after Italian) German Adlerholz (1596 or earlier). Compare also scientific Latin Aquilaria, genus name (1784 or earlier).

The aromatic resinous heartwood of the South-East Asian tree Aquilaria malaccensis and certain other trees of the genera Aquilaria and Gyrinops; (occasionally also) †any of these trees (obsolete). Cf. agar n.¹Also called aloe, agalloch, agila, calambac.
