Etymology: < du- (in classical Latin duo two: see duo n.) + foil n.1, after trefoil n., quinquefoil n., etc. Compare earlier bifoil n. and twayblade n. N.E.D. (1897) gives the pronunciation as (diū·foil) /ˈdjuːfɔɪl/.
Heraldry. Obsolete. rare.

1688 R. Holme Acad. Armory ii. iv. §2. 58 He beareth Argent, a Dufoile or Twyfoile, Vert, flowered, Purpure. The Flower is like that which we commonly call, Dog stones or Priest-pintle, but more spireing.
?1828 W. Berry Encycl. Heraldica I. sig. Bbbbv Unifoil, a plant with but one leaf, mentioned by Holme; as, also, a dufoil, with but two leaves; but such bearings are very uncommon.
