Etymology: apparently a frequentative of dialect dove in same sense; compare Old English dofung dotage, also Old Norse dofna, Gothic daubnan, to become heavy, flat, or dead.
Scottish and northern dialect.
1. transitive. To send off into a light slumber; to stun, stupefy. rare.But in first quot. it may be past participle of the intransitive sense.
