Etymology: < post-classical Latin Amalfitanus, Amalphitanus of or relating to Amalfi (6th cent.), native or inhabitant of Amalfi (8th cent.) < Amalfi (Italian Amalfi ), the name of a city in southern Italy + classical Latin -itānus -itan suffix.Compare Middle French, French †Amalfitan (1575 as noun, or earlier; now Amalfitain), Italian Amalfitano (1539 as noun, or earlier). Compare the following earlier passage, in which Amalfitan is apparently used as a name of the duchy of Amalfi:1574 J. Studley tr. J. Bale Pageant of Popes f. 141v The dukedomes of Capuan and Amalfitan [printed Amalsitan]. [No corresponding sentence in the Latin original.]
