Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman and Middle French amable (late 12th cent. in Old French; Middle French, French aimable ), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin amābilis lovable < amāre to love (see amant n.) + -bilis -ble suffix. Compare earlier amiable adj.Compare Old Occitan amable (14th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation), Catalan amable (14th cent.), Spanish amable (c1275), Portuguese amável (1280), Italian amabile (see amabile adj.). Compare the following, apparently isolated example of earlier amably (adjective) friendly, courteous (apparently < Anglo-Norman and Middle French amable + -ly suffix¹):a1425 Blood of Hayles l. 198 in C.
