Now historical and rare.In a cotton mill, each spinner traditionally supervised a pair of mules; coupling mules together in this way doubled the number of spindles for which each spinner was responsible and allowed mill-owners to reduce staffing costs while maintaining output. The practice was common in the 1830s and 1840s, before the widespread introduction of the self-acting mule. ΚΠ 1842 L.
