单词 dr pepper
释义

Dr Peppern.

Brit. /ˌdɒktə ˈpɛpə/, U.S. /ˌdɑktər ˈpɛpər/
Forms: 1800s– Dr. Pepper (with point), 1900s Doctor Pepper, 1900s– Dr Pepper (without point).
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain.Several sources assert that this drink was invented around 1885 by Charles Alderton (1857–1941), U.S. pharmacist, at the Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas, and first sold at the pharmacy's soda fountain, although documentary evidence to confirm this beyond doubt appears to be lacking. The proprietary name Dr. Pepper was in use from around 1895; prior to this, the product was marketed as Dr. Pepper's Phos-Ferrates (and variant spellings):1890 Austin (Texas) Statesman 11 May 6/2 (advt.) Wanted—everybody to try a glass of Dr. Pepper's Phos-Ferates, the ideal tonic and brain food.1897 Marietta (Indian Territory) Monitor 10 Sept. 5/1 (advt.) If you feel debilitated, ‘all broke up’, drink Dr. Pepper's Phos Ferrates at Irwin & Evants' Soda Fount, 5c... Dr. Pepper's Phos Ferrate's. Stops that worn-out feeling of yours.Several historical individuals have been identified as the individual referred to in the product's name, although in none of these cases has evidence to support a connection with the drink been found. The name may rather have been invented to support the various medical claims made for the product in early advertising, as a tonic and aid to digestion (perhaps compare pepper n. 4b, pep n.1, pepsin n.).
Originally U.S.
A proprietary name for: a carbonated soft drink with a dark red-brown colour and a distinctive flavour suggestive of cherries, almonds, and herbs and spices; a bottle, can, or drink of this.
