Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin alūminōsus.
Etymology: < classical Latin alūminōsus containing alum < alūmin- , alūmen alum n.1 + -ōsus -ous suffix. Compare Middle French, French alumineux (1478 in eaue alumineuse in a translation of Chauliac; compare quot. ?a1425). Compare alumed adj. With aluminous water in some quotations at sense 1 compare alum water n. and also early uses of alum v. In sense 2 after alumina n.
