Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymon: Latin alumina.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin alumina (1787) < classical Latin alūmin- , alūmen alum n.1 + -a suffix1, formed by the French chemical nomenclators after e.g. soda and magnesia , its character as the earth of alum having been proved by A. S. Marggraf in 1754 (compare earth of alum n. at earth n.1 Phrases 6, German Alaunerde ); other proposed names were arga n. and argil n. Compare slightly earlier alumine n. and its French etymon.
Chemistry.
A white highly heat-resistant solid, aluminium oxide, which is a major constituent of many rocks, esp. clays, and occurs crystallized as corundum, sapphire, etc.Formula: Al2O3.
