Pharmacology.
A synthetic purine analogue that acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme xanthine oxidase, used esp. in the treatment of gout and other conditions characterized by an abnormally high level of uric acid in the blood and urine.Chemical name: 4-hydroxypyrazolo-[3,4-d]pyrimidine; C5H4N4O.
