Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: allo- comb. form, Greek μέρος , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < allo- comb. form + ancient Greek μέρος part (see mero- comb. form1) + -ism suffix; compare -merism comb. form. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ̆lǫ·mĕriz'm) /æˈlɒmərɪz(ə)m/.
Mineralogy. Obsolete. rare.
J. P. Cooke's term for: variation in chemical composition without change of crystalline form.

1860 J. P. Cooke in London, Edinb. & Dublin Philos. Mag. 4th Ser. 19 416 Admitting, then, the possibility of a variation of composition in a mineral species, independent of the phænomena of isomorphism, it becomes of importance to distinguish this new class of phænomena by a separate term; and I would propose for this purpose the word Allomerism.
