Etymology: < Old French distriction rigour, severity, arbitrary control (Godefroy), < Latin districtiōn-em , noun of action < distringĕre : see distrain v., district adj.The sense ‘Sudden display’ in J., copied in later dictionaries, is founded on a mistaken quotation of distinction as distriction in J. Collier Ess. Moral Subj. (1697) ii. xii. 118.
