Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the antepenultimate syllable of this combining form. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. mathematico-physical Brit. /maθ(ə)ˌmatᵻkə(ʊ)ˈfɪzᵻkl/, U.S. /ˌmæθ(ə)ˈˌmædəkoʊˈfɪzək(ə)l/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mathematico-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin mathematico- (1620 in mathematico-pöetica , 1630 in physico-mathematico-mechanica , both in the titles of works published in German-speaking Europe), combining form of classical Latin mathēmaticus mathematic adj.The isolated early formation mathematico-historical is probably after post-classical Latin mathematico-historicus (1656 or earlier). English formations are found from early 19th cent.
Forming adjectives, usually with hyphen, with the sense ‘mathematical and ——’, as mathematico-logical, mathematico-physical, etc. Also (occasionally) forming nouns with the sense ‘mathematical’, as mathematico-logician.
