Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French alogier; Italian alloggiare.
Etymology: Originally < Old French alogier, Anglo-Norman and Middle French aloger, alloger to set up camp, to lodge (c1155, reflexive), to lodge (a person) (although this is apparently first attested later: a1399 or earlier) < a a- prefix5 + loger , logier lodge v. In later use reborrowed < Italian alloggiare (14th cent. used intransitively, a1363 used transitively) < a- (see ad- prefix) + loggia lodge n. Compare Old Occitan alotgar , alochar (14th cent.). Compare earlier lodge v.
Obsolete.
