Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French amuse-bouche.
Etymology: < French amuse-bouche (1932 or earlier), literally ‘(that which) amuses the mouth’ < amuser amuse v. + bouche bouche n.1, apparently as an alteration of amuse-gueule (although this is first attested slightly later: see amuse-gueule n.), which remains the more usual term in French.In the unchanged plural form after the French plural form.
A small savoury item of food served as an appetizer. Also figurative. Cf. amuse-gueule n.
