Etymology: < classical Latin -ulus, diminutive, frequentative, and instrumental suffix, extended form of Old Latin -lus , diminutive suffix, probably related to -el suffix². Compare -ulum suffix, -ula suffix, -ule suffix.The ending is common in words borrowed from Latin, but occurs very rarely in new formations within English (e.g. palulus n.).
