Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: dog n.1, whelk n.1
Etymology: < dog n.1 + whelk n.1, apparently so called on account of the predatory or scavenging behaviour of the molluscs.
1. A marine gastropod mollusc, Nucella lapillus (family Muricidae), which is common on North Atlantic coasts and is a predator of other molluscs. Also more widely (U.S.): = dogwinkle n. at dog n.1 Compounds 3b(a). Nucella lapillus was formerly placed in the genera Buccinum, Thais, or Purpura.
