Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Ambystoma , -id suffix³.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Ambystoma, genus name (J. J. Tschudi 1839, in Mém. de la Soc. des Sci. Nat. de Neuchâtel (1840) 2 57; irregularly (with loss of l ) < ancient Greek ἁμβλύς blunt (see amblygon adj.) + στόμα mouth: see stoma n.) + -id suffix³, after scientific Latin Ambystomidae, former family name (1858 or earlier).
