Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin retrōdūcere, retrō dūcere.
Etymology: < classical Latin retrōdūcere (also retrō dūcere) to drag backward, to extend (something) further back < retrō retro- prefix + dūcere to lead (see duct n.). In quot. 1659 at sense 1 probably immediately after introduce v. In sense 2 originally after German zurückführen (19th cent. or earlier in this sense), literally ‘to lead back’; compare retroduction n. 3. Compare earlier reduce v.
1. transitive. To return to a former state or place; to put back. Obsolete.In quot. 1659: to withdraw or cancel (something previously introduced).
