Etymology: noun of action < dismiss v., corresponding to Latin dīmissiōn-em and Old French desmission ‘dismissing, forgoing, resignation’, etc. (Cotgrave), modern French démission renunciation. See the doublets dimission n. and demission n.2
The action of dismissing; the fact of being dismissed. Now largely replaced in all senses by the equivalent dismissal n.
