Etymology: < Italian (now historical) ambrosino (1662 or earlier; 14th cent. or earlier as †anbrosino , †anbrogino , †anbrugino ) < post-classical Latin ambrosinus (1257 in an Italian source; also ambroxinus (1264 and beginning of the 14th cent. in Italian sources)) < Ambrosius (see Ambrosian adj.²) + -inus -ine suffix¹.Compare Middle French (Burgundy) ambrosayne, ambrysane, anbressaine, embresanne, enbresaine, enbresenne, feminine noun (attested from the late 14th to the late 15th cent.), denoting the Milanese silver coin which was also used in Burgundy.

Numismatics. Now rare.

A silver coin with a cross on the obverse and an image of St Ambrose enthroned on the reverse.The coin was issued in Milan in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The references to St Ambrose on horseback in quots. 1753 and 1771 perhaps results from a confusion with a different coin, of the Visconti era, which has Ambrose enthroned on one side, and a knight on horseback on the other.
