Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin allitteration-, allitteratio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin allitteration-, allitteratio (a1503 in a work by the Italian humanist Pontanus (G. G. Pontano)) < classical Latin al- , variant of ad- ad- prefix + littera letter n.1 + -ātiō -ation suffix, after allocūtiō allocution n. Compare Italian allitterazione (1609 as †allitteratione ), French allittération (1751; perhaps < English). Compare later alliterate v.
The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words, especially when employed for stylistic effect; an instance of this; spec. (in Old and Middle English and other Germanic poetry) the commencement of certain accented syllables of a verse with the same consonant or consonantal group, or with any vowel sounds.
