Etymology: < dis- prefix + affirm v., after Anglo-Norman desafermer, desaffermer, disaffermer to declare (a legal decision, judgement, person's right, contract, etc.) void or invalid (early 14th cent. or earlier; late 13th cent. in sense ‘to unfasten’).
1. transitive. Law. To declare (something) to be void or invalid; to cancel; to annul or reverse (a decision); to repudiate (an agreement). Also intransitive. Cf. affirm v. 1a, confirm v. 2.
