Etymology: < Old French deschevelé past participle, < des- , dis- prefix + Old French chevel , cheveu hair, = medieval Latin dis- , dēcapillātus stripped of hair, shaven, Spanish descabellado ‘bald, hauing no haire left on his head’: compare Italian (di)scapigliare ‘to desheuell, to disorder..ones head or haires’. In another form of this word, the of Old French past participle, became mute in Middle English: see dishevel adj.
