Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French desconseiller.
Etymology: < Middle French desconseiller, desconseillier, desconsillier, French déconseiller to counsel (a person) against some undertaking or course of action (late 12th cent. in Old French; c1050 in past participle desconseillié in sense ‘distraught, helpless’), to counsel against (an action, undertaking, etc.) (1364; < des- dis- prefix + conseillier , consillier , etc. counsel v.), with remodelling of the prefix after dis- prefix. Compare Old Occitan desconselhar, Spanish desconsejar (late 13th cent.), Italian (now archaic) disconsigliare (1559).
1. transitive. To counsel (a person) against some undertaking or course of action; to dissuade from a course of action; = disadvise v. 1. Also intransitive. Obsolete.In quot. 1477 with double object.
