单词 diapsid
释义

diapsidadj.n.

/dʌɪˈapsɪd/
Etymology: < modern Latin Diapsida (H. F. Osborn 1903, in Mem. Amer. Mus. Nat. Hist. I. 455), < di- comb. form + Greek ἁψίς, ἁψιδ- arch.
Of a reptile skull: having two pairs of temporal arches, as in reptiles once grouped in the subclass Diapsida. Also as n.
ΚΠ
1933 A. S. Romer Vertebr. Paleontol. vi. 128 It was once thought that all reptiles originally had two temporal openings, and hence forms with two openings (or two bars across the temple, which amounts to the same thing) were termed ‘diapsid’ (two-arched).
1956 A. S. Romer Osteol. Reptiles ii. 473 It is very possible that all diapsids and diapsid derivatives have sprung from a common ancestor.
1969 A. Bellairs Life of Reptiles I. ii. 24 In many reptiles there are in fact two such openings in the skull on each side, one above the other, and hence an upper and a lower arch. This condition is known as diapsid.
