Etymology: < late Latin diaphōnia dissonance, discord, < Greek διαϕωνία discord, < διάϕωνος dissonant, < δια- apart + ϕωνεῖν to sound. Compare French diaphonie, 18th cent. in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter.
Music.
1. In etymological sense: Discord. Obsolete. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.

1656 T. Blount Glossographia Diaphony, a divers sound, a discord.
2. In medieval music (as usually understood): The most primitive form of harmony, in which the parts proceeded by parallel motion in fourths, fifths, and octaves: the same as organum n.1But some suppose it to have meant a system in which the parts were sung responsively at these intervals.
