单词 dingthrift
释义

dingthriftn.

Brit. /ˈdɪŋθrɪft/, U.S. /ˈdɪŋˌθrɪft/
Forms: early Middle English dyngethryftes (plural), 1500s–1600s dingthrift.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ding v.1, thrift n.1
Etymology: Apparently < ding v.1 + thrift n.1 Compare later spendthrift n.The semantic motivation for sense 1 is uncertain, as the nature of the game is unclear. It has alternatively been suggested that, in this sense, the second element reflects a transmission error for a variant of thrust v. (see Forms 1.α. at that entry; compare later thrust n.).
1. In plural. The name of: a game (precise form unclear). Obsolete.

2. A person who is wasteful, reckless, or extravagant with money or resources; a profligate person, a spendthrift. rare after 17th cent. (historical and archaic in later use).
