Forms: 1600s 1800s allelew, 1800s alleleu, 1800s allilu, 1900s– aililiú.
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Irish. Etymon: Irish aililiú.
Etymology: Apparently < Irish aililiú, interjection indicating surprise or sorrow (although this is first attested later: c1740 or earlier), of imitative origin. Compare earlier pillaloo int., and also later ululu n., whillaloo n. Compare also earlier ululation n.The Irish interjection is now sometimes associated with alleluia int. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ælĭliū·) /ælɪˈljuː/.
