Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian allegretto.
Etymology: < Italian allegretto (attested as a musical term only from 1758, although earlier currency is implied by the English and French words) < allegro allegro n. + -etto -et suffix1. Compare French allegretto (1703 as a musical direction).
