单词 diabantite
释义

diabantiten.

Brit. /ˌdʌɪəˈbantʌɪt/, U.S. /ˌdaɪəˈbænˌtaɪt/
Origin: A borrowing from German, combined with an English element. Etymons: German Diabantachronnyn , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < diabant- (in German Diabantachronnyn ( C. T. Liebe Die färbenden Mineralien der Diabase des Voigtlands und Frankenwalds (1869) 2: see note)) + -ite suffix1.Liebe so called the mineral on account of the fact that it imparts the green colour to diabase. German Diabantachronnyn appears to be formed irregularly < ancient Greek διαβαντ- , διάβας ‘having crossed over’, past participle of διάβαινειν to cross over (see diabasis n.) + Hellenistic Greek χρώννυναι to colour ( < ancient Greek χρώς colour < the same base as χρῶμα colour: see chrome n.); the first part of the German name of the mineral reflects the association of German Diabase diabase n. with ancient Greek διαβαντ- , διάβας , as discussed in the etymology of diabase n. With Hawes's motivation of the English name, compare:1875 G. W. Hawes in Amer. Jrnl. Sci. 109 456 Since his [sc. Liebe's] long name, ‘diabantachronnyn’, which was intended..to express the idea that the mineral is the coloring ingredient of the diabase, does not convey that meaning, the Greek of the latter part of the word not signifying color, and since the name is not in accordance with the principles of mineralogical nomenclature, I have taken the liberty of shortening it to diabantite, which though not expressing all that Liebe intended to convey, still indicates its relation to diabase.
Mineralogy.
A green mineral of the chlorite group, usually regarded as a variety of clinochlore.
