单词 dhow
释义

dhown.

Brit. /daʊ/, U.S. /daʊ/
Forms: Also daou, daw, dow.
Etymology: Original language unknown; now in use all round the coast of the Arabian Sea from Western India to East Africa, also on Lake Nyanza. The Marathi form is ḍāw , and the word exists in modern Arabic as dāw (Johnson 1852). See note on dh- at D n.If the word tava occurring of date 1470 in Athanasius Nikitin (India in 15th cent., Hakl. Soc. 1858) be, as it appears to be, the same word, it would tend to localize the word at Ormus or Hormuz in the Persian Gulf.
A native vessel used on the Arabian Sea, generally with a single mast, and of 150 to 200 tons burden; but the name is somewhat widely applied to all Arab vessels, and has become especially well known in connection with the slave trade on the East coast of Africa.
