Forms: 1700s– amildar, 1700s amuldar, 1700s aumildar.
Etymology: < Persian ʿamaldār collector of revenues, agent < Arabic ʿamal work, labour ( < ʿamila : see amil n.) + Persian -dār , forming nouns denoting a person who holds or possesses (ultimately < the same base as dār- to hold, possess, already in Old Persian < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit dhṛ- to hold, keep, and perhaps also classical Latin firmus firm adj.). Compare slightly later amil n.Compare the following earlier example, although it is unclear whether this should be interpreted as reflecting this word or as an isolated borrowing < Persian māldār holder of property:1680 Diary & Consultation Bk. 9 Nov. in Rec. Fort St. George, 1672-81 (1910) 77 The Mauldar or Didwan that came with the Ruccas from Golcondah.

1788 Gentleman's Mag. Aug. 743/1 He gave particular injunctions to all his Aumildars, &c. to collect the balances due from the Ryotts to the Circar.
1799 Duke of Wellington Dispatches (1837) I. 47 Never to pass over any disrespect from the amildars to the officers.
1850 in Wesleyan Missionary Notices (1851) Jan. 3/1 He gave me, in the presence of the Amildar and his whole cutcherry, a piece of land.
1947 Times of India 17 Sept. 1/4 Reports..indicate that people [in Bangalore] are attempting to get possession of taluk offices and then elect their own Amildars and other administrative officers.
2007 J. K. Severn Architects of Empire vi. 156 The amildars actually collected the taxes.
