Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French alleggeance.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman alleggeance, allegeaunce, aleggeance, aleggeaunce, aligeance, aligaunz allegiance, fealty, lands, realm (13th cent.), alteration (after words in a- a- prefix5) of ligeance , legeance ligeance n. Compare ligeance n. The currency of the form in a- , both in Anglo-Norman and in English, was probably reinforced by association with allegeance n.2 (compare forms at that entry); on all- spellings compare ad- prefix. Compare post-classical Latin allegiantia (14th cent. in a British source), Middle French aliganche (a1400 in an apparently isolated attestation from Liège), and also ( < English) French allégeance (1651).The rare plural form allegiancies apparently shows this word rather than allegiancy n., which is not countable.
1.
a. Originally: (Feudal Law) the duty, homage, etc., owed by a vassal or liege man (liegeman n.) to the king or lord from whom he holds land; fealty (now historical). In later use: duty or service rendered by a subject to a sovereign or government. Also: formal acknowledgement of this.
