Etymology: < ancient Greek -ρρυγχος, combining form (in e.g. πλατύρρυγχος : see platyrhynchous adj. at platy- comb. form ) of ῥύγχος snout (perhaps < the same Indo-European base as Armenian rngunk‘ (plural) nostrils, nose) + -ous suffix. Compare scientific Latin -rhynchus, chiefly forming taxonomic names.Formations are found from the second half of the 19th cent., chiefly after scientific Latin taxonomic names in -rhynchus.
