Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < a variant (with nasal infix) of the same Germanic base as Old English spræc shoot, sprig, slip (of a plant), Icelandic sprak small piece of wood, twigs, splinters, cuttings, also Middle Dutch sproc twig, stick (Dutch regional sprok), Middle Low German sprok brushwood, and (with different ablaut grade) Old Icelandic sprek stick, of uncertain origin.
Obsolete.
1. A shoot or sprout. Also figurative.In quot. OE2 translating classical Latin stirps, which has senses including ‘(tree) stem, (woody) plant, tree stump’. Cf. sense 2.
