Etymology: < French dimère (1817 in Cuvier, designating beetles with tarsi composed of two segments, < ancient Greek διμερής bipartite (in Aristotle)) + -ous suffix. Compare -merous comb. form. The form 2-merous in quot. 1870 at sense b may perhaps represent a separate word with the pronunciation /ˈtuːmərəs/ (compare five-merous adj.).
Consisting of two parts or divisions: spec.
a. Entomology. Having two joints: applied to the tarsus of an insect.
